Bunbury is a quaint coastal town situated around a 2-hour drive south of the Western Australian capital, Perth, with farmers markets, wildlife parks, national parks, beaches, art galleries, and nature walks all within a short drive of Bunbury downtown.
Bunbury makes for a great drive, not just because of its scenic locations, but also the many art murals that line its streets. Bunbury has the largest street and public art collection in regional Australia. There are many cultural locations, such as the Bunbury Regional Art Galleries, Australia's largest regional art gallery.
If you want to get a read for the atmosphere in Bunbury, drive to Victoria Street, which is full of bars, shops, and boutiques. It gives that great small-town feel with many of the shops being independent and local. We recommend parking your rental car near the tip of either end and spending the afternoon exploring its many locations. You're sure to find a keepsake or something special to remember your trip in one of its stores.
Outside of Victoria Street, you will also find hidden gems in converted warehouses down unassuming lanes, however, you can also find high-end shopping with modern department stores.
Bunbury offers a lot of fun and free activities. A recent addition to the city streets is the Wardandi Boodja. Sitting on the edge of Koombana Park is the new face of street art in Bunbury, literally. This 5 and a half metre tall artwork represents the face of the Noongar Aboriginal people. Created by local artists Alex Mickle and Nicole Mickle of Safehaven Studios and designed by Mike Kimble, it was unveiled in February 2019.
Get a great view of the city from Marlston Hill Lookout, an excellent way to start or end a day of shopping and eating on Victoria Street. The city has many points to look out from, from Boulters Heights and Koombana Park Lookout also offering stunning views of the city from different vantage points.
Bunbury has several beaches to enjoy, from Koombana Beach, Lighthouse Beach, Back Beach and Mindalong Beach, which are all within a short distance of the city centre. Back Beach is one of the more popular beaches in the region, with white sand beaches, rock pools, snorkelling and surfing all popular on the beach.
Keep the Aquatic fun rolling with a visit to Koombana Bay, the home of 90 bottlenose dolphins and the Dolphin Discovery Centre. The beach interaction zone of the centre is on a public beach, so it is free of charge to go and watch these inquisitive aquatic mammals.
Bunbury is home to many other fun activities and cultural sites. For example, the Bunbury Regional Art Gallery or BRAG has a dynamic, ever-changing roster of exhibitions from local, Australian, and international artists. The gallery has six different spaces, presenting cutting edge exhibitions as well as painting, sculpture, pottery, illustration and more. Check out the BRAG website to see what exhibitions are on during your time in Bunbury.
The Bunbury Museum & Heritage Centre is located in downtown Bunbury in the heritage-listed Paisley Centre. Take part in the interactive displays, see the collection of historical documents, artefacts, photographs and other objects that detail the history of the city and the region. Stop by one of the many shops and cafes that surround the centre.
Bunbury is filled with fun activities and places to see. With a wildlife park, wineries, breweries, nature walks, gardens, beaches, inlets, historical sites and modern conveniences all within a short drive of downtown Bunbury in your car hire.
