Let’s head to Melville Downtown! Melville is a suburb within Perth in Western Australia, so you already know to expect the fantastic contrast of city life with an exceptional coast. Melville is located southwest of Perth, near areas like Fremantle, Swan River, and Coogee Beach.
Melville has a Mediterranean climate. It’s one of the sunniest areas in Australia, so you can expect plenty of sunshine even in the cold winter months. Melville has hot and dry summers, with cooler winters.
Melville is a great base for your Western Australian adventure. Whether you want to head to the coast, explore the CBD, or take a road trip to one of the nearby national parks, you can do it all from Melville.
There are heaps of ways to spend the day while you’re staying in Melville. Let’s start the day bright and early with a cup of coffee and a spot of brekkie from one of the many cafes in Melville. Enjoy Delicious Fingers and Hi Roller Cafe for that early morning caffeine hit.
Or start your day with a local adventure and enjoy breakfast by the beach in Fremantle. Affectionately known as Freo by the locals, Fremantle is a thriving area of Perth that is just a ten-minute drive from Melville. Drive out here and take a seat at The Attic Fremantle, Chalkys Espresso Bar, or Duck Duck Bruce. After breakfast, head to the local markets to experience some of the local delicacies here on offer, before heading to Bather’s Beach for a swim and sunbathe. While you’re on this side of the city, check out Fremantle Prison, which is a world-heritage listed site. Here, you’ll learn about the colonial history in Fremantle as well as plenty of prison tales. Next, head to Little Creatures Brewery for a (safe) tasting session with friends. Take in the gorgeous views while you’re here. You can finish the day with a spot of dinner at one of the award-winning restaurants in Freo. We recommend either Moore & Moore, Bathers Beach House, or Manuka Woodfire Kitchen.
Of course, while you’re in Melville, it makes sense to head into the CBD for a day. Perth CBD is a great place to explore, so take in the sights with Kings Park and Botanic Garden, Elizabeth Quay, and so much more. You could also head out to the beach, as Perth is home to an amazing array of beaches and coastline. There’s Cottesloe, Coogee, Scarborough, and Whitfords just to name a few. Enjoy the dreamy white sand and pristine blue ocean while you’re here.
If you’re staying in Melville, then you simply must take a day trip to the nearby Rottnest Island. Rottnest Island is a 25-minute boat trip from Fremantle, so it’s super close to wherever you’re staying in Melville. This island is a perfect day trip, with white sands, blue ocean, and the friendliest animal in the world, the Quokka. Keep an eye out as you’re exploring the island for this smiley friend - they’ll pose for selfies and enjoy interactions with humans.
An epic road trip from Perth is the Nambung National Park, which is home to The Pinnacles. One of the most visited spots in Western Australia, the Pinnacles are natural limestone structures that formed between 25,000 to 35,000 years ago. We recommend visiting at either sunrise or sunset to truly take in all of their beauty!
We think you’ll have a great time in Melville. It really is a great spot to use as a base for an epic WA adventure, so take your time exploring and enjoy all that this area has to offer. If you’re feeling adventurous, use this spot as the start of a bigger road trip up to Exmouth and even Broome! We can’t wait to see you soon at Melville Downtown Thrifty.
