Hobart is one of those cities with something for everyone. Unique art, breathtaking natural landscape, strange native animals and a thriving food scene. With world-renowned art galleries such as Mona (Museum of Old and New Art), or the stunning Bruny Island, just a 45-minute drive away, there are plenty of great day tours from Hobart. See the famous Cape Bruny Lighthouse as it sits atop the rugged cliff faces Bruny Island is known for.
At just 30 minutes outside Hobart, Mt Wellington and Wellington Park offer a natural refuge to everyday life for locals and visitors. Many make the trek up to the pinnacle of Mt Wellington; at 1400 metres high, it can regularly be below freezing at the summit, so if you are planning on the hike, be sure to prepare for all weather, as conditions can change very quickly. However, views from the top are worth it, as long as weather permits, you can see the whole capital of Hobart and out to the sea. With free entry, picnic facilities, barbecues and a number of bushwalking trails, Wellington Park offers a great day out for people of any age.
You don’t have to dock in a boat to see Port Arthur; your car hire will get you there just fine. Around an hour and a half’s drive from central Hobart, down the coast, travelling over bridges, waterways and green natural scenery, you will find Port Arthur. Nestled in a picturesque harbour is the former penal colony. Become immersed in the vivid local history, learn about the lumber mills that convicts were sent to as penance and free labour. See the 30 world heritage listed buildings, including convict sites, churches, homes, manors and more. Stepping into much of Port Arthur is like stepping 200 years into the past. Learn about the history in the Port Arthur Gallery and shop at the local stores.
You can even visit…The Isle of The Dead! Dead men tell no tales, but tour guides do. Book a guided tour of The Isle of the Dead and learn about the tiny island cemetery. The final resting place of more than 1000 convicts, military and civil officers. From 1833 to 1877 it operated as a cemetery for convicts and others alike. Many of the convicts were buried here after being transported halfway around the world.
Hobart city has many fun and unique activities without ever having to leave the CBD. Start at the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens. Sitting on the edge of the city centre, the botanical gardens offer views of a waterfront location. Relax and unwind in the Japanese garden and travel around the roughly 14 hectares of unique collections. Join a 50-minute walking tour that departs from the ‘hub’ each day to get a guided tour of the collections and the garden’s history.
No trip to Hobart is complete without a walk-through Salamanca place. It is the spot for food, culture, galleries, bars and more. The best time to go is on a Saturday when the market is operating. Enjoy live music, port views, pubs and dozens of stalls. Be sure not to fill up on dinner, or come in with an empty stomach, nothing worse than walking by delicious local market food when you can’t eat!
A 20-minute drive north of Hobart will find you in the Moorilla winery and Berriedale Peninsula. Home to cafes, restaurants, and Mona. The most famous museum in Tasmania, known for its eclectic and Avant-garde style. You can wander around the museum with a glass of the house red, although maybe not the best idea in the House of Mirrors exhibition currently running, they don’t cover dry-cleaning. Check out the museum's website for what’s on. With a Thrifty car hire, you can enjoy the local countryside and wineries at your leisure. So, start planning your Tassie holiday today!
