Make sure to pack some layers for this incredible city break! Melbourne is lovingly known for having four seasons in one day, meaning it could be both sunny and hot and pouring with rain while you have your morning cuppa. Don’t let this stop you from having an amazing adventure, but make sure to pack your Thrifty boot with some extra layers, just in case.

Melbourne always has an event that’s worth attending. In fact, it’s home to the Australian F1 Grand Prix, Australian Open Tennis, Fashion Week, AFL Grand Final, the Melbourne Cup Carnival, Melbourne's Music Week, and the International Film, Comedy, Jazz, Fringe and Writer’s festivals just to name a few! If your trip times with one of these events, try and grab a ticket. You won’t regret it!

Eat Your Way Through Melbourne, the Cultural Capital of Australia

Melbourne is renowned for its delicious food and incredible coffee. On every street corner, you’ll find cute cafes, bustling restaurants and the best bars around.

The cafe scene in Melbourne is unlike any other in Australia. You’ll struggle to find a chain store here, for every street is lined with the most versatile, incredible cafes. For example, just off Flinders Street is the world-famous Lune Croissanterie, home to the most delicious croissant. If you fancy something a bit more substantial for brekky, head to Top Paddock, Higher Ground, or Market Lane Coffee.

Once night falls, it’s time to hit the restaurants of Melbourne. Try some Asian fusion at Chin Chin, or head to the delicious Italian eatery, 400 Gradi in Brunswick. If Vietnamese food is your vibe, then drive your Thrifty rental over to Victoria Street in Richmond, where you’ll find plenty of eateries to try. Another firm favourite is Movida, the best place to find Spanish food in town; this charming tapas restaurant is situated in one of the many laneways in Melbourne’s city centre.

The nightlife is definitely one not to miss on your city break. Embla is a rare wine bar that’s managed to be the perfect combination of approachable yet ridiculously cool. If you fancy a trip back in time, head to the Everleigh, where speakeasy vibes are strong, and you’ll be back in the roaring 20s. Finally, if you’re ready to have a drink and see the sights, head to Siglo Bar, which offers stunning views and stunning drinks. Remember, if you’re having a drink, practice safe driving and designate a driver to take you all home.

Explore Melbourne in Your Thrifty Rental Car

For those that want an adventure, grab your car keys and head on out to the Great Ocean Road. A frequent member of every ‘must-see’ travel list, the Great Ocean Road is home to some stunning sights, like the Twelve Apostles. It can be done in a day, or if you want to spend more time exploring, book a night stay somewhere on the road. Alternatively, if you fancy exploring a bit closer to home, pack your bathers and head to the coast at either Brighton, Elwood, or St Kilda beach.

Melbourne has plenty of culture and history to it, too. For example, the street art at Hosier Lane is simply incredible, and a firm favourite amongst tourists and locals alike. History lovers can check out one of the many museums on offer, like the Immigration Museum to the Melbourne Museum or the Museum of Chinese Australian History.
